On December 4, 2024, Saggas and Valenciaport formalized their collaboration by signing a memorandum of understanding aimed at fostering innovation in renewable gases and carbon dioxide (CO2) management. This agreement was inkinged by Rosa María Prieto, President of Saggas, and Mar Chao, President of the Port Authority of València (PAV), signaling their commitment to planetary sustainability through technology and infrastructural development.
The core objective of this partnership is to identify and develop innovative projects that accelerate the advancement of storage, generation, and logistics solutions for renewable gases—such as hydrogen and BioGNL—and CO2. This initiative seeks to leverage the operational synergies available at the Sagunto regasification plant and outlines efforts to align with broader environmental goals.
This collaboration is specifically oriented towards addressing the decarbonization needs of the maritime-port sector along with the logistics chain and surrounding regions. It aims to ensure compliance with various European regulations, including the European Green Pact, the Fuel Maritime Initiative, and the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR). These regulations underscore the urgent need for the maritime and logistics sectors to transition towards greener energy solutions.
The memorandum reflects Saggas’ proactive stance on engaging in projects that enhance renewable gas infrastructure and contribute to the overarching energy transition framework spearheaded by the PAV. By working together, Saggas and Valenciaport are taking significant steps towards achieving sustainability goals, thereby paving the way for cleaner, more efficient energy use in port activities and beyond.
Overall, this collaboration represents a critical move towards incorporating innovative technologies that support the energy transition while fostering economic and environmental benefits for the region. The alliance not only addresses the present challenges in energy logistics but also anticipates future demands for sustainable energy solutions, highlighting the importance of cooperative efforts in the shift to renewable resources.
