The demand for Filipino seafarers is on an upward trend, with projections indicating a growth of 5% to 7% annually over the next year and a half. This surge is largely attributed to the expansion of international fleets and the recovery of the cruise and offshore sectors, according to Yvette Araullo, managing director of ATPI Travel Philippines.
Filipino crew members are increasingly sought after, particularly in sectors such as offshore energy, short-sea container services, and passenger vessels. Emerging regional hubs have also played a pivotal role in this growth. To address rising demands, ATPI is investing in technology, establishing airline partnerships, and enhancing local infrastructure.
The maritime workforce is substantial, with the BIMCO/International Chamber of Shipping Seafarer Workforce Report 2024 revealing approximately 1.89 million seafarers globally, including around 857,540 officers and 1,035,180 ratings. Araullo emphasized that evolving fleet patterns are impacting the global deployment of Filipino seafarers, necessitating better digital tools and streamlined operational processes for crew movements.
Key developments include tighter crew rotations, increased group movements, and a stronger emphasis on timely and safe crew changes. In response, ATPI has improved its data visibility tools and travel management systems to facilitate efficient coordination between shipowners, manning agencies, and travel partners, ensuring adequate flight capacity for urgent crew changes.
ATPI’s digital platforms, such as CrewHub and CrewLink, manage crew travel from booking through real-time tracking. The Travel Tracking System (TTS) offers live location updates and risk alerts, enhancing duty-of-care measures for traveling crew members. Araullo stated the significance of flexibility and communication, especially with the rise of major hubs like Singapore, Dubai, and Doha.
To support this growing demand, ATPI has recently opened a World Support Centre (WSC) in Manila, operational 24/7, providing a comprehensive range of marine and travel management services. The company recognizes the Philippines as a crucial source of maritime personnel due to its large pool of skilled and English-proficient seafarers.
