The second day of the 2nd BIMSTEC Ports Conclave, held in Visakhapatnam, focused on pivotal discussions aimed at enhancing maritime cooperation and improving port efficiency within the Bay of Bengal region. The day began with a session dedicated to boosting intra-regional trade, which currently remains low at only 7%. Experts highlighted the importance of streamlining customs processes, eliminating regulatory hurdles, and enhancing logistics to facilitate smoother cargo movement and more efficient port operations. Addressing these challenges is crucial for fostering greater economic integration among BIMSTEC member countries.
A panel discussion centered on the potential for cruise tourism in the region, emphasizing collaborative strategies for promoting cruise circuits and eco-tourism. The speakers underscored the rich biodiversity and cultural heritage of the region, which can be leveraged to attract tourists and boost coastal tourism.
In addition to discussing tourism, another session established strategic roadmaps for collaboration among BIMSTEC ports. The dialogue aimed at fostering cooperation among member states to enhance the overall performance of port facilities.
The concluding technical session addressed the pressing need for upskilling the maritime workforce. It was suggested that public-private partnerships in maritime education, shipbuilding, and port management could play a significant role in creating a competitive talent pool. This focus on workforce development is essential for ensuring that the region can meet the demands of an evolving maritime industry.
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, was actively involved, having visited the Hindustan Shipyard and reviewed pertinent issues at the Dredging Corporation of India. The participation of notable figures such as M. Angamuthu, Chairperson of the Visakhapatnam Port Authority, added depth to the discussions, driving forward the agenda of improved regional collaboration and maritime efficiency.
Overall, the conclave served as a platform for addressing critical maritime issues, fostering inter-country collaborations, and promoting sustainable economic growth in the Bay of Bengal region.
