Eaglestar Marine Holdings recently celebrated a significant milestone by appointing Captain Eezmaira Sazzea binti Shaharuzzaman as the company’s first Malaysian female shipmaster. A pioneer in her field, Captain Eezmaira was among the inaugural group of Malaysian women to receive professional maritime training at Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM), which began accepting female cadets in 2006. She graduated in 2011 with a Diploma in Nautical Studies and has accumulated ten years of sailing experience within Eaglestar.
Her journey as a captain commenced on August 13, 2021, when she took command of the Seri Bijaksana, a 153,000 cbm LNG carrier. In her role, Captain Eezmaira is responsible for the overall navigation, operations, and safety of her crew, vessel, and cargo. She expressed her gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “I am very grateful and honored to be the first Malaysian female Master Mariner in Eaglestar,” and emphasized her hope to inspire other women in the maritime industry to achieve their own successes.
Captain Peter Liew, Managing Director and CEO of Eaglestar, voiced the company’s pride in appointing Captain Eezmaira, highlighting Eaglestar’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and dynamic workplace. He underscored the importance of empowering female seafarers and providing equal opportunities, which are critical for promoting diversity in the maritime sector.
