DG Shipping Celebrates 15th Edition of Seafarer Day

On June 25, 2025, the National Maritime Day of Seafarers Central Committee, along with the Directorate General of Shipping under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW), celebrated the 15th edition of the Day of the Seafarer. The theme for this year was “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity,” which underscores the critical role that oceans play in socio-economic development and emphasizes the shared responsibilities towards marine preservation and sustainable practices.

Central to the event was the launch of the nationwide campaign “My Harassment-Free Ship,” aimed at promoting dignity and safety for seafarers while advocating for a zero-tolerance policy against harassment at sea. This initiative reflects growing concerns over the wellbeing of maritime workers and seeks to create an environment where all seafarers can work without fear of harassment or discrimination.

The ceremony included a ceremonial Guard of Honour, signifying respect and appreciation for the contributions of Indian seafarers who significantly uphold the nation’s maritime heritage and contribute to global shipping excellence.

Vice Admiral Deepak Kumar Goswami, AVSM, the Director General of Naval Projects in Mumbai, attended as the Chief Guest, bringing a sense of importance to the occasion with his presence. The event was also graced by Shri Shyam Jagannathan, IAS, the Director General of Shipping and Chairman of the NMDC Central Committee, highlighting the collective acknowledgment of the maritime community’s vital role within India and beyond.

Through this event, the committee reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of seafarers while advocating for safer and more equitable working conditions on ships. The combined efforts of the government and maritime organizations highlight the ongoing dialogue about the importance of protecting the rights of seafarers and ensuring their safety in an increasingly complex maritime environment.
