A new advanced simulation suite, inaugurated at the Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM), significantly enhances maritime education in the region. Supplied by Wärtsilä, a leading technology group, this facility is a crucial part of the training arm of Malaysia International Shipping Corporation (MISC), a subsidiary of Petronas. The introduction of Wärtsilä’s dual-fuel simulator technology, along with immersive virtual reality elements, prepares seafaring professionals for realistic training scenarios, equipping them with essential skills for future maritime challenges.
The new suite emphasizes sustainable practices in maritime operations, incorporating training for future fuels such as methanol and ammonia. This aligns with the industry’s shift toward decarbonization and greener technologies. Furthermore, ALAM has been recognized as a participant in Wärtsilä’s Maritime Advancement in Simulation, Technology and R&D Services (MASTERS) program, marking it as the first such center in the Asia-Pacific region.
ALAM’s facility includes state-of-the-art technical simulators for both engine-room management and liquid cargo handling. It features a full-mission bridge simulator with a 270-degree visualization, task bridges equipped with dynamic positioning technology, and extended reality (XR) training capabilities. Additionally, the suite offers GMDSS and ECDIS classroom simulators, as well as cloud-based simulations to create blended learning experiences that are vital for modern maritime education.
The MASTERS program aims to solidify collaborations with leading global maritime training and R&D providers, allowing them to utilize Wärtsilä’s advanced training products and services to elevate maritime training standards. Manivannan Subramaniam, Chief Executive of ALAM, highlighted the importance of this launch for the institution’s vision of becoming the Maritime University of Choice in Asia. He emphasized the need for training programs that prepare students not only with technical skills but also with leadership abilities and adaptability in a globally evolving maritime environment.
