The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) recently unveiled the Maritime Energy Training Facility (METF) Digital Platform, aimed at transforming the global maritime workforce’s training in alternative marine fuels and new technologies. This initiative was showcased during the “Accelerating Digitalisation and Decarbonisation Conference” at Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) and is projected to launch by mid-2025.
Initially introduced at SMW 2024, the METF is a key component of Singapore’s maritime decarbonization and workforce development strategy. To ensure the training provided aligns with industry demands, MPA has collaborated with training providers, shipping firms, and maritime associations to standardize training protocols. The result is a training management system that simplifies access to relevant courses, tracks progress and certifications, and ensures compliance with international standards.
The METF Digital Platform features an organized portal for maritime professionals, including seafarers, allowing them to easily find, register, and pay for training programs. It aims to alleviate the administrative burden on maritime companies by streamlining processes like certification management and training grant eligibility. Currently serving Singapore-based maritime companies and registered ships, the platform is expected to expand to international stakeholders in subsequent phases. The prototype is currently being tested with select industry users.
Additionally, in February 2025, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will begin developing interim guidelines for seafarer training focused on alternative marine fuels and technologies. MPA has contributed by proposing training guidelines for methanol and ammonia, capitalizing on Singapore’s expertise in competency frameworks and training program development. The METF Digital Platform will facilitate the execution of these essential training courses, meeting updated international safety and operational standards.
In conjunction with these developments, the MaritimeSG LowCarbon50 Awards Ceremony recognized companies excelling in carbon accounting and decarbonization efforts. This year’s ceremony honored six winners and provided eight Honourable Mentions, assessed by a panel from MPA, the UN Global Compact Network Singapore (GCNS), and various industry associations. The awards are part of a collaborative effort under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that promotes carbon management practices among maritime stakeholders.
Moreover, as part of the preparations for SMW 2025, MPA and the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) conducted the second Maritime Green Finance Industry Sharing Series. This workshop aimed to enhance capacity among over 70 participants, such as shipping financiers and operators, highlighting the Singapore-Asia Taxonomy (SAT) as a framework for identifying and financing green maritime activities.
Together, these initiatives represent Singapore’s commitment to leading the maritime sector in digitalization and sustainability, ensuring it remains adaptable to the future’s evolving energy landscape.
