The German Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) has awarded a contract to the K130 consortium for the construction of five additional K130 Class Corvettes. The consortium, which includes Lürssen Werft GmbH & Co. KG, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, and German Naval Yards Kiel, has enlisted NOSKE-KAESER Maritime Solutions, headquartered in Hamburg, for supplying critical maritime systems.
NOSKE-KAESER Maritime Solutions will provide a range of systems including air conditioning, ventilation, refrigeration, and fire extinguishing systems as part of their contract with the consortium, which began in June this year. Beyond these components, their scope also covers heating systems, CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear) protection systems, and warfare agent detection systems. The agreement extends beyond simply supplying these technologies; it includes installation and commissioning of the systems as well.
Having successfully participated in the first batch of K130 corvettes, NOSKE-KAESER aims to streamline the logistical process for this new order by utilizing components already tested and proven in the first batch. This approach not only ensures reduced delivery times but also minimizes complexity. Aware of evolving standards and regulations, some components are being updated or replaced to align with current laws, including new VDI hygiene regulations.
A highlight of NOSKE-KAESER’s contribution is the HyFEx® fire extinguishing system, which has been embraced by the German Navy and the DNV GL classification society. This system, previously used in the engine rooms of the first batch of corvettes, will again be employed in the current order. For refrigeration, collaboration with ENGIE Refrigeration will see the use of advanced water chillers equipped with low-maintenance, low-noise magnetic-bearing compressors, maintaining similar dimensions to previous models for easy installation.
The first components from NOSKE-KAESER are slated for delivery in 2019, with installation to occur across four shipyards in Bremen, Kiel, Wolgast, and Hamburg. Following successful commissioning and testing, these new corvettes are expected to be delivered and taken into service starting in 2022.
NOSKE-KAESER Maritime Solutions expresses gratitude for the trust placed in them by ARGE K130. The company, with a long-standing reputation, looks forward to enhancing its collaboration with its partners for the production of the second batch of corvettes, ensuring that all systems meet both operational and safety standards. Overall, this project marks a significant step in bolstering Germany’s naval capabilities.
