In a recent interview with Maritime CEO, John Michael Radziwill, chairman of Monaco-based C Transport Maritime (CTM), discussed the unexpected impacts of Donald Trump’s tariffs on the dry bulk shipping sector. Radziwill noted that these tariffs have shifted global trade patterns, enhancing the demand for dry bulk shipping and consequently increasing spot and time charter rates.
C Transport Maritime, which celebrated its 20th anniversary last October, is recognized for its commercial management and has expanded its operations to include ship ownership over the past decade. CTM specializes in various bulk carrier types, including supramaxes, panamaxes, and capesizes.
Radziwill’s insights reveal a nuanced understanding of market conditions. He predicts that while the overall dry bulk trade growth will remain flat over the next year, with a fleet growth of approximately 3%, capesize vessels will benefit from supportive supply-side factors, including stable fleet growth and increases in long-haul tonne miles for commodities like iron ore and bauxite. In contrast, smaller bulk vessels may face more pressure due to heightened fleet growth.
He also criticized the current valuation of ship assets, stating they are expensive compared to Forward Freight Agreement (FFA) rates, which are offering low returns on investment. However, he suggested that if the upward trends in dry bulk freight markets persist, these current levels might soon be viewed as bargains.
On the technological front, Radziwill highlighted the importance of artificial intelligence as a significant breakthrough for the shipping industry. CTM has been at the forefront of this innovation by investing in Complexio, an AI platform that integrates and analyzes a company’s entire data ecosystem. He believes that AI will redefine every aspect of the maritime value chain, similar to its transformative effects across other sectors.
Looking ahead, Radziwill is set to speak at the upcoming Maritime CEO Forum in Monaco and next April’s Geneva Dry event, where he will join other respected figures in the shipping industry to discuss developments and future trends. The insights shared in the interview underline the evolving dynamics in dry bulk shipping and the crucial role of technology and global trade patterns in shaping these changes.
