The Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) 2024, organized by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), is set to take place from April 15 to 19 at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre. Celebrating its 18th edition, this year’s theme, “Actions meet Ambition,” centers on four key pillars: decarbonisation, digitalisation, services, and talent development. Expected to attract over 10,000 professionals from nearly 80 countries—including government officials, industry experts, and thought leaders—SMW aims to enhance Singapore’s position as a global maritime hub.
The event will feature more than 50 programs, including the inaugural Expo@SMW trade exhibition from April 16 to 18, showcasing maritime innovations from approximately 50 companies and startups. MPA’s leadership highlighted Singapore’s continuous growth in the maritime sector, which reflects confidence from stakeholders and a strong collaboration among businesses, workers, and the government. In his opening address, Minister for Transport Chee Hong Tat expressed Singapore’s commitment to fostering innovation, resilient operations, and talent, aligning with global sustainability targets.
A pivotal maritime dialogue will address Supply Chain Resilience, Digitalisation, and Decarbonisation, featuring high-profile speakers like Germany’s Dr. Volker Wissing and Norway’s Even Tronstad Sagebakken. They will discuss the maritime sector’s challenges amid globalization and the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to seize new opportunities. Other notable attendees will include Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), who will share insights on ensuring seafarer welfare and the rapid transition towards greener operations propelled by the 2023 GHG Strategy.
During SMW 2024, MPA aims to formalize partnerships with over 30 organizations to bolster training and cybersecurity in the maritime industry. Significant announcements regarding advancements in low-emission technologies, maritime AI, and workforce development are also expected.
A landmark initiative, the Maritime Energy Training Facility (METF), will be established to equip maritime professionals with competencies necessary for operating new, cleaner vessels. Supported by 22 partners, METF aims to address skills gaps by providing specialized training on handling future marine fuels and essential safety protocols. This initiative aligns with the Tripartite Advisory Panel’s recommendations to enhance the maritime workforce.
On April 16, the third Maritime International Advisory Panel (IAP) meeting will convene, adding five new members including leaders from major maritime organizations and tech companies, to enrich discussions on the maritime ecosystem and digitalization trends.
For public engagement, MPA is offering refreshed Singapore Maritime Discoveries Tours, including visits to the Singapore Maritime Gallery and Raffles Lighthouse, with special discounts during SMW.
Overall, SMW 2024 represents a comprehensive effort by Singapore to lead and innovate in the maritime realm while fostering a sustainable future through collaboration and skill development.
