China and Malaysia to Conduct Joint Military Exercise in October

In October, China and Malaysia are set to conduct a joint military exercise in Malaysia and surrounding waters, focusing on humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and maritime security, as reported by the Chinese Defence Ministry and a related media outlet. This initiative is part of China’s broader strategy to enhance defense cooperation with Southeast Asian nations amid ongoing tensions in the South China Sea, a region marked by contested territorial claims.

The exercise is scheduled from October 15 to 23, with forces departing from Chinese military ports in Zhanjiang, Sanya, and Hong Kong on October 8. Over 1,000 military personnel will participate, including more than 700 from China. The exercises will include various equipment such as vessels, helicopters, and unmanned systems. This marks the sixth joint exercise of its kind, aimed at fostering collaboration between Chinese and Southeast Asian militaries to better address non-traditional security threats while promoting regional peace and stability.

The Chinese Defence Ministry emphasized that the drills are intended to strengthen practical cooperation, helping both sides enhance their ability to manage potential crises related to humanitarian challenges and maritime threats. Observers from other ASEAN member states have also been invited to witness the proceedings.

In recent years, this collaboration has expanded; the fifth exercise took place earlier in 2023 with participation from Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, among others. Tensions persist in the South China Sea, where China asserts extensive territorial claims, conflicting with claims by Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

The upcoming military exercise coincides with Malaysia’s preparations to host the annual ASEAN summit, set for late October, where discussions on a planned code of conduct for the South China Sea will take place. Additionally, Malaysia will host a meeting of ASEAN defense ministers and their regional counterparts from October 30 to November 2, underscoring the significance of military diplomacy in the region amidst the complex geopolitical landscape.

Despite the strategic military collaboration, the region continues to grapple with security considerations, emphasizing the need for cautious diplomacy and cooperation among all involved parties.
