Summary of ‘Mission 30’ Skilling and Guidance Programme
Anglo Eastern, a Hong Kong-based shipping conglomerate, has launched the ‘Mission 30’ initiative, which aims to significantly increase the proportion of management-level merchant navy officers under 30 years of age from a mere 1% to 30% by 2030. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to align with India’s vision of becoming ‘Viksit-Bharat,’ leveraging the potential of its youthful demographic.
As one of the largest employers of Indian seafarers, Anglo Eastern recognizes the vital role India plays in providing skilled maritime professionals. With the Indian economy projected to be the third-largest globally, potentially crossing $10 trillion by the next decade, ‘Mission 30’ sets the stage for young Indian officers to enhance their careers in the maritime sector. Notably, India boasts a youthful population, with 65% under 35 years old and an average median age of 29.
The ‘Mission 30’ programme offers a structured skilling and guidance framework, providing personalized career ladder maps for each participating officer. These roadmaps identify the current status of the officers and outline their ideal career trajectories, helping them bridge any gaps in their skills or experiences. Additionally, the programme includes focused initiatives to prepare officers for timely promotions, ensuring they are well-equipped to meet industry demands.
Recruitment mainly targets South India through Anglo Eastern’s Indian entity based in Kochi. The Anglo Eastern Maritime Academy also plays a crucial role by guaranteeing placements for graduates, allowing them to gain essential on-the-job training aboard various types of cargo ships.
In summary, ‘Mission 30’ is a forward-thinking initiative aimed at empowering young Indian seafarers, aligning their career paths with the anticipated growth of the maritime economy. By fostering a skilled workforce, this initiative not only supports individual growth but also contributes to India’s prominence on the global maritime stage.
