Sharjah Maritime Academy and Massachusetts Maritime Academy Strengthen Global Partnership

On January 26, 2026, Sharjah Maritime Academy (SMA) and Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) formalized their commitment to enhancing international collaboration in maritime education by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at SMA’s Khorfakkan campus. The agreement was signed by Rear Admiral Francis McDonald, President of MMA, and Dr. Hashim AlZaabi, Chancellor of SMA, symbolizing a shared vision for cooperation that aims to elevate the standards of maritime education and prepare cadets for the global workforce.

The MoU establishes a cooperative framework focused on various academic programs and professional training initiatives related to maritime disciplines. This includes joint research, continuing education, and mutual development of strategies that meet national regulations and support the sustainability of maritime education initiatives. This partnership aims to foster high-quality education and the integration of cadets into the global maritime marketplace.

During the signing ceremony, a delegation of MMA students visited SMA to tour facilities such as simulators and laboratories, offering them a first-hand experience of SMA’s educational environment and applied learning approach. This interaction underscores the importance of creating a practical understanding for students in the maritime field.

The agreement outlines plans for mutual programs in several specific areas, including Marine Transportation, Marine Engineering, Maritime Business, and Supply Chain Management. The collaboration also encompasses research and development, the exchange of faculty and staff, and opportunities for students to study abroad as part of their undergraduate education.

Dr. Hashim Al Zaabi emphasized that the MoU reflects SMA’s commitment to fostering international partnerships with leading maritime educational institutions. He sees this collaboration as instrumental in advancing maritime education, training, and research while also preparing skilled professionals to thrive in the maritime sector. Similarly, Rear Admiral Francis McDonald highlighted that the MoU provides a structured foundation for academic cooperation, enabling an enriching environment for learning, research, and professional development in maritime fields.

Ultimately, this MoU signifies not only a partnership between two respected maritime academies but also their collective dedication to advancing maritime education and workforce development on an international scale. Through this cooperation, both institutions aim to contribute significantly to the field, ensuring that future maritime professionals are well-equipped to meet the challenges of a rapidly evolving global maritime industry.
