On Tuesday, the Japanese government highlighted the crucial role of Filipino seafarers in the global maritime economy, emphasizing that they make up about 70% of Japan’s merchant fleet. This acknowledgment coincided with the graduation ceremony of 84 Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation (BSMT) cadets and 100 Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering (BSME) cadets from the MOL Magsaysay Maritime Academy (MMMA), all members of the Class of 2026.
In his address, Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Endo Kazuya emphasized the importance of Filipino seafarers in fostering international maritime cooperation. He stated, “The maritime industry plays a crucial role in the global economy,” and he expressed optimism for the new graduates, confident that their professionalism and dedication would contribute significantly to the safety and stability of international shipping.

The Class of 2026 graduates are set to start their maritime careers as third officers and third engineers aboard vessels operated by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and Magsaysay Maritime Corporation.
