The Port of Ramsgate has recently unveiled a new pontoon system, funded in part by the European Union, to enhance mooring facilities for small boat owners. Located in the Western Gulley of the Royal Harbour Marina, this system addresses historical challenges faced by the Ramsgate Small Boat Owners Association (RSBOA). Previously, small boats were moored using a chain trot system which was not only complex but also required frequent and costly maintenance by volunteers. The entangled chains on the seabed complicated dredging efforts, making it time-consuming and expensive.
The newly installed pontoon system features a 46-meter-long primary walkway spine pontoon, complemented by eight finger pontoons creating eight bays for the safe mooring of up to 30 boats. This Mediterranean-style arrangement provides easier access for vessels and optimizes the available water space. Constructed with galvanised steel frames, concrete floatation units, and GRP anti-slip decking from Solent Marine Ltd, these pontoons are designed to last 25 years.
Funding for the pontoon purchase came from the European Interreg funding stream called Yacht Valley, while the removal of the old chains, dredging, and installation were financed by Thanet District Council. The harbour maintenance team effectively collaborated with the MV Mannin crew to combine annual maintenance dredging with the intricate installation process. After fitting a robust chain and sinker mooring system to stabilize the pontoons, the system underwent monitoring through tidal cycles to ensure stability.
With final tests completed and safety ladders in place, the RSBOA plans to install solar-powered, low-energy LED lighting along the walkway for enhanced safety. RSBOA spokesman Michael Hart expressed gratitude towards the Harbour Master and the staff, stating that the new system simplifies mooring and maintains adequate water depth.
Councillor Hunter Stummer-Schmertzing, the cabinet member for operational services, emphasized the importance of improving facilities for all users. He highlighted that these new pontoons are part of a broader initiative to revitalize Ramsgate Port, as outlined in the Maritime Plan. Excitement among RSBOA members is palpable as they transition their boats back from temporary berths in the Western Outer Marina now that their new facilities are operational.
Overall, the introduction of the new pontoon system is seen as a significant improvement for the local boating community, aiming to clear the waiting list for memberships and expand access to maritime activities in the Royal Harbour.
