Level-I Blaze Occurs at Shops in Mumbai Central; No Injuries Reported

On Sunday evening, a Level-I fire was reported near D B Marg, opposite Reliance Mall in Mumbai Central. The blaze originated in a chawl, affecting several shops and rooms, but fortunately, there were no injuries reported. Emergency response teams, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), the police, and staff from the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST), arrived swiftly on the scene to manage the situation.

According to Congress MLA Amin Patel, the fire is believed to have been triggered by an electrical short circuit. The fire broke out around 10:30-10:45 PM and was initially perceived as small but rapidly escalated due to the presence of numerous small shops and residential spaces in the vicinity. Fortunately, the residential area above the shops was vacant at the time.

MLA Patel reported significant damage to the property but reassured that no casualties occurred. He confirmed that while the fire was largely under control, firefighting efforts were ongoing. “The fire brigade is working to extinguish the fire that is now under control but may take another two hours to fully put out. Cooling operations will continue until tomorrow,” he stated.

However, safety concerns arose due to the building’s precarious condition. Certain sections on the left side were deemed dangerously unstable, prompting plans for demolition. Patel indicated that the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) would be contacted the following morning to manage the demolition process.

This incident highlights the ongoing risks associated with fire hazards in densely populated urban areas like Mumbai, where residential and commercial spaces often coexist in close proximity. The swift response from local authorities likely mitigated the potential for greater disaster, thanks in part to community awareness around safety protocols in such environments.

As the situation develops, the focus will remain on ensuring safety and addressing the aftermath of the fire.
