Fuel Reserves Near Wan Hai Vessel Fire Zone Present Serious Risk

A significant maritime incident has occurred involving the Singapore-flagged ship WANHAI 503, which has caught fire off the coast of Kannur, Kerala. The blaze, which started at sea, has now spread towards the ship’s accommodation area, according to the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA). The vessel is carrying a total of 157 containers containing hazardous materials, including 32.2 tons of alcohol and nitrocellulose, a highly flammable substance often used in lacquers, plastics, and explosives.

The precarious situation is exacerbated by the presence of 2000 tons of fuel oil and 240 tons of diesel oil located in tanks near the fire, posing a serious risk not only of explosion but also of significant environmental contamination. Shyam Jagannathan, the Director General of Shipping, has highlighted the environmental threats that the WANHAI 503 could pose if the situation isn’t addressed promptly. The ship is currently drifting approximately 1.9 kilometers south of its point of origin, unmanned, and continues to emit smoke and flames, raising alarms about the potential impact on the surrounding marine ecosystem.

In response to the emergency, the shipowners have contracted a business to manage pollution control, but there has been a delay in the deployment of professional firefighters to tackle the blaze. Discussions are ongoing about potentially recruiting experts from the Netherlands or the United Kingdom to assist. The primary concern remains the ship’s drifting, and efforts to secure a towline are deemed critical due to the severity of the fire. In collaboration with the Indian Navy and Coast Guard, various strategic options are being evaluated to mitigate the situation.

Compounding the urgency of the crisis, the Coast Guard has reported sightings of ten to fifteen containers adrift, raising fears that they could wash ashore by June 12, 2025, if not intercepted. The contents of these containers remain a mystery, adding further complexity to an already dangerous scenario.

Overall, the ongoing fire aboard the WANHAI 503 poses immediate threats both in terms of human safety and environmental protection. As authorities continue to evaluate their response and possible solutions to control the fire and address the drifting ship, there is a pressing need to act swiftly to avoid a catastrophic outcome.
