On April 3, 2023, the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) inaugurated the Bayhead Bypass Road, an essential infrastructure project aimed at improving vehicular traffic flow to the Port of Durban and reducing truck congestion at the Durban Container Terminals. The need for this bypass arose from significant flood damage to the existing Bayhead Road in April 2022, necessitating a solution to manage heavy vehicle diversion.
The newly constructed 1.6-kilometer bypass road connects the Shell Service Station on Bayhead Road to the Ambrose Park Access Road, leading to Langberg Road at the Transnet Academy’s Faculty of Port Terminals and Marine. This road plays a crucial role in alleviating congestion and ensuring a smoother traffic experience around the port, aligning with TNPA’s commitment to enhance the efficiency of maritime logistics.
Mpumi Dweba-Kwetana, the Port Manager at the Port of Durban, emphasized the bypass’s role in TNPA’s overarching strategy to decongest the port and maintain fluidity in the logistics chain. The improved traffic flow will support the port’s ability to meet industry demands and underscores Transnet’s mission of fostering economic growth through suitable infrastructure.
The bypass road itself features a uni-directional, single-carriageway with two lanes directed towards the Island View Complex and the Durban Container Terminals. To enhance safety and accessibility, the infrastructure includes four canal crossings, two level crossings, adequate fencing, and street lighting, ensuring a secure environment for users.
This significant development is expected to substantially relieve existing traffic issues in the area and facilitate better logistical operations at one of South Africa’s key ports, marking an important step in improving the nation’s transportation network and economic efficiency.
