The Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN) Bangladesh convened its inaugural Working Group Meeting at the Shippers Council of Bangladesh (SCB) conference room in Dhaka. This significant event, presided over by SCB Chairman Rezaul Karim, aimed to address key issues related to corruption in the maritime industry. Participants included notable figures such as UN Global Compact Network Bangladesh Executive Director Ms. Shahamin Zaman, MACN Bangladesh Project Lead Syed Ariful Islam, SCB Senior Vice Chairman Md. Ariful Ahsan, Vice Chairman Ganesh Chandra Saha, along with representatives from various shipping associations and companies.
The focus of the meeting was to discuss the challenges and risks posed by corruption in Bangladesh’s maritime sector, particularly within port operations and cargo clearance processes. Attendees engaged in exchanging ideas and experiences that highlighted the systemic issues contributing to corruption. There was a collective effort to identify potential solutions and best practices aimed at enhancing integrity and transparency within the industry.
Since its establishment in 2022, MACN has collaborated with the United Nations Global Compact Network Bangladesh to combat corruption in the maritime sector. The initiative focuses on identifying and mitigating corruption risks that stakeholders face. In December 2023, MACN Bangladesh took a significant step by forming its first Working Group. This group is tasked with analyzing key vulnerabilities within the maritime sector and developing strategies to address them. They aim to foster collaboration among stakeholders, advocate for necessary policy measures, and support MACN members to combat corruption effectively.
The formation of this Working Group signifies a proactive approach towards creating a more transparent and accountable maritime environment in Bangladesh. The meeting established a foundational platform for ongoing dialogue and action against corruption, reflecting a commitment from industry leaders to uphold ethical practices. The collaborative efforts outlined during this meeting are essential for enhancing trust and improving operational efficiencies within the maritime sector of Bangladesh.
