On November 9, 2023, the death toll from a boat capsizing incident near the Thailand-Malaysia border rose to 11, with approximately 70 individuals believed to have been on board. Authorities reported that 13 survivors had been rescued, primarily from the Rohingya community. Meanwhile, the status of another boat carrying 230 passengers was still uncertain. Thai officials recovered four bodies, including two children, while Malaysia’s maritime agency reported seven fatalities among the boat’s passengers.
The Rohingya, a persecuted Muslim minority, often undertake dangerous sea journeys to escape violence and deteriorating living conditions in Myanmar and Bangladesh. Following a military crackdown in Myanmar’s Rakhine state in 2017, about 1.3 million Rohingya currently live as refugees in overcrowded camps in Bangladesh. The dire circumstances compel many to risk their lives at sea in search of a safer haven, particularly in Malaysia and Indonesia.
At a press conference in Langkawi, Malaysia, maritime agency director Romli Mustafa revealed that cooperative measures were in place with Thai authorities to enhance search efforts. Both nations deployed air assets to aid the ongoing operations, which are expected to continue for up to seven days. Romli indicated that information received suggested the initial boat had departed from the Myanmar-Bangladesh border approximately two weeks before the tragedy. Notably, some passengers had transferred to another vessel just before the sinking.
Between January and early November, over 5,100 Rohingya attempted perilous sea voyages from Myanmar and Bangladesh, with nearly 600 individuals reported as dead or missing, according to the UN Refugee Agency. An official from Thailand’s maritime enforcement noted that among the deceased were two children and two adults. Two of the women recovered were confirmed to have been carrying refugee cards identifying them as Rohingya, underscoring the ongoing plight faced by this marginalized community.
The tragedy highlights the urgent need for international and regional cooperation to address the humanitarian crisis and improve conditions for the Rohingya, who continue to flee persecution and seek refuge against daunting odds.
