Government Addresses Safety and Welfare of Indian Seafarers During Maritime Challenges

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) of India is actively monitoring and safeguarding the welfare of Indian seafarers amid critical maritime challenges. In collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs, Indian missions abroad, and various maritime stakeholders, the MoPSW is ensuring that maritime operations remain uninterrupted. Mr. Mukesh Mangal, the Additional Secretary of the Ministry, highlighted the government’s concerted efforts in this regard.

The government has confirmed the safety of all Indian seafarers in affected areas, reporting that no incidents involving Indian-flagged vessels occurred in the last 24 hours. This achievement underscores the efficacy of the existing monitoring and response frameworks designed to protect Indian maritime interests.

A significant tool in this response is the Directorate General of Shipping’s dedicated control room, which has proven to be responsive and operational. Since its activation, the control room has managed an impressive volume of communication, receiving over 6,727 calls and 13,900 emails. In just the last day, it handled 147 calls and 276 emails, highlighting the high demand for assistance and the efficiency of the government’s response.

In terms of repatriation efforts, the Indian government has successfully facilitated the return of over 2,400 seafarers to date. This includes 30 seafarers who returned safely from the Gulf region in the last 24 hours, demonstrating the government’s ongoing commitment to supporting its maritime personnel.

Overall, the Indian government remains dedicated to ensuring the safety, security, and welfare of its seafarers around the world, while simultaneously working to uphold the resilience and continuity of maritime trade despite prevailing challenges.
